The Trail Life Silva Starter 1-2-3 Compass combines simplicity with comfort and will become a reliable companion in all situations. The distinct arrow and scales/markings in a clear contemporary font combined with lots of transparency in the baseplate make navigating easier. The compass has a base plate map measuring in mm and inches, thus compatible with most maps, and the detachable lanyard makes it a reliable companion in all situations. The baseplate has a slight up-curve at the back end for a perfect fit in the hand. The red/black and North/South lines in the capsule bottom ensure easy and safe settling.

Lacks declination adjustment, which can be serious in parts of the country/ world.
As a good starter compass, the brand carries the quality.

I highly recommend the Silva starter compass over other offerings on the TL store website. Silva provides superior quality, and their compasses are easy to use for most Trailmen. As this is a starter compass, I wouldn’t expect it to have a declination adjustment option typically found on orienteering compasses (race compasses). I like Suunto and Silva, but Silva is offered on the TL website. I strongly discourage purchasing the “UST Waypoint Compass” offered on TL’s website. The UST arrived disassembled and lacked bezel ring locking components. Stick with the Silva. Happy Navigating!

I bought this for our 6-year-old son, who is in his first year at Trail Life. This was a great starter compass for him – it’s easy to use, read, and doesn’t have a lot of extra features he doesn’t need at this point. So far, it has also proven to be accurate.
